Food waste: Why is it a problem?
It has been estimated that one third of all the food that is produced worldwide is wasted. That equates to 1.3 billion tons.
That’s quite a lot – to attempt to put it into some sort of understandable context, it’s 200 times the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza!
In the US alone we throw out over 33.8 million tons of food – enough to fill the Empire State Building 91 times! Cafes and restaurants contribute a whopping 13% of this, or more than 61,000 tons of waste every single day – the equivalent of the weight of almost 10 Eiffel Towers.
Why? The reasons vary: from stringent regulation on shapes and sizes of vegetables to kilograms upon kilograms of perfectly edible restaurant food being thrown away at the end of a day’s service. Not only is it costly (for both the environment and our pockets) but it’s unnecessary and unfair – why should we accept it’s right to waste such vast amounts of produce that we’ve worked so hard to create?
What is for certain is that we don’t have to continue like this. BuffetGO was founded on the back of a single mission: to reduce avoidable food waste by making what’s left at a buffet restaurant’s usual end-of-service available to you at massively discounted prices.
And it’s just as delicious as usual. In fact, it tastes even better when you know you’re doing your bit to help save our precious planet.
Help spread the word. Careless food waste: your days are numbered. BuffetGO is coming for you.
